There are windows and then there are windows…
I think I’ve written about it before, but here’s a picture of one of the windows in our cellar that were left in when the patio around the house was built. They were basically left to rot and collect dirt at the bottom of open shafts.
In the spring we removed one next to the stairs and filled the shaft in. This is from underneath the living room. This room is notably more humid than the rest of the cellar, so we’ll have to put a vent in. Although we do now have a radiator in there, we’ve decided against an all-singing, all-dancing vent that attempts to retain heat, because we only heat minimally.
We’ve noticed from the other window that moisture will continue to seep into the cellar via osmosis. We can do some work to seal joint between the patio and the house, but in some places, we’ll have to live with the salt deposits it brings. We also need to remind ourselves that it’s been like this for years, but it just wasn’t visible.
