Ostium clausus est

Ever since we had the idea of knocking through part of the wall between the kitchen and the dining room we’ve discussed whether we should close off the door from the hall. To me it seemed obvious both from the practical perspective - it would give us much needed space for cabinet in the dining room and a chest of drawers or coatrack in the hall - and from the aesthetic: the dining room would have to similarly sized entrances to the connecting rooms.
But, it would also change the aesthetic from the hall, with symmetrical doors.

But, if form follows function, so what? Well, function isn’t everything, it also has to look right and we’ll, hopefully, be able to live with it for the next thirty odd years.
With all the changes we are making, we are also conscious of respecting the character of the house; which is why we’re so pleased with the staircase and the upstairs flooring.
So, we’ve discussed without really discussing and without coming to a conclusion. With time passing, we needed to make a decision, as not taking a decision often being the worst way to take one. So, on Sunday I tried to mock up on the computer what the dining room would look like with the door closed up.
Whether it was just too appease me, or because it looked OK, Astrid agreed we should close up the door.
Well, let’s hope so anyway!
