Keeping the cold out

This is the door into the garden, and on the right into the cellar. Before things like double glazing it was important to keep the cold out so, in the winter at least, a heavy curtain would have hung here so that the doors could be opened and closed with a minimal exchange of air.

While we want to keep as much of the character as possible, some changes are always necessary. After all, throughout its life there have been changes. The downstairs bathroom was once just a toilet; my study has been a kitchen and a bedroom, and the attic was once a living room.

This is the end result: a bit more space in the hall. Maybe for shoe cupboard and a chair? Not my call; I know my place: in the kitchen, my study, or, of I’ve been particularly naughty, the cellar!
