Into every life a little rain must fall
On Saturday morning, while I was making myself a pot of tea, I noticed some water on the floor. Thinking that I must have somehow spilled it, I mopped it up and went upstairs.
In the afternoon, however, Astrid also noticed some water on the floor and it was clear to us both that the dishwasher was the cause. As you can see in the picture, the rubber skirt below the door is hanging down. But having placed bowls beneath it, we know that is not the direct source of the water. Presumably, it’s the drip tray into which the skirt should be connected.
I’ve tried several times with varying degrees of success to tuck the skirt into where I think it should be, but it quickly works loose when the door is used. Fortunately, it’s never a lot of water and can be quickly cleared up, but it’s very annoying.
The dishwasher is the one that was on the kitchen here. And, as it’s not very old, we decided to keep it. However, that was at the beginning of September, before fully realised the scale of the renovations we would end up doing. And it was sitting outside all that time, which won’t have done it any good.
Because I thought there might be problems, I did want to bring the dishwasher from the Waldlehne, but the guy from the removals company said that he was unable to turn off the tap so we left it. The house has now been officially sold but I’m sure we could go and get the other one if we wanted. It, too, isn’t very old, but I’ve never liked it because it doesn’t have a rinse programme and is also quite inflexible: they’re both Siemens/Bosch.
I would love to be able to fix the one here but I think that will require uninstalling it first. And we do have some other options. The old two-thirds dishwasher from my flat on Kronenstraße has been waiting to go to Cologne for months, but it was at least kept completely dry in the garage, and Astrid has a full size one in Cologne that we could swap. She’s there so rarely that it hardly gets used.
But maybe the spill is a gypsy’s warning that we should get a new one. I’d love to be able to discuss the options with someone with more plumbing talent than I have! Just in case someone so inclined is reading and has time on their hands.😃
