From little nectarines do mighty plum trees grow

I don’t think this is the actual stone, but this is how my plum tree started life.

My first flat in Düsseldorf on Helmholtz Str. was on the fifth floor and the previous tenant had left some empty window boxes on the balcony. I was too lazy to want to take the kitchen waste down to the cellar every day so used to put some into the window boxes to compost. This worked really well and after a year or so the first plants started to grow and one of them turned into a beautiful little plum tree, nectarines being a cross between plums and peaches.

It would blossom early in the spring and was usually the first blossom in the whole courtyard. Bees used to travel quite a way for its nectar. It was wonderful to see nature in action.

When I moved to Kronen Str. I admit I didn’t really look after it but Astrid decided it needed to be potted properly and it started to thrive again.

It came with me to Waldlehne and then here to Sengelsweg where we promised it would finally be planted properly.

And there it is!
