Grand Designs

Although we’d decided against herbs for the North wall we thought that fruit and vegetables could work.
These are the designs we worked through. The first one was really little more than an attempt to see how many motifs would we need, and I think it does that well. But it a bit of a mess.
Astrid then grouped the objects together. This gave more structure but also left quite a lot of empty space, and we didn’t want to have more tiles.
In the third design I tried to combine the first two and it was everybody’s favourite, even Mrs van Hees thought so.

And this was the updated design for the West wall. Again, we both thought this looked better than the lobster. In a bigger space I think some of the still life motiifs would look fantastic. But with only four rows to work with and knowing that some bits and bobs would always around, we had to scale down our ambitions.
The tiles had arrived and it was time to see whether the designs would survive the transition to reality. Handmade tiles on walls that we knew were nowhere near straight…

Considering the fact that removing the old tiles from the kitchen was one of the first things we did in the house, I can’t really say there wasn’t time to get the walls straight. But we had so many other things to do, that it just never happened.
And this is the final result.

There was a bit of a panic with the North wall with Ivan working from the wrong picture and we’ve had to move the power socket to the left. But we’re more than happy with the results! 😃
